Halloween :: Definitions

Halloween Word Origins

Halloween can be traced back to Samhain, the ancient Celtic harvest festival honoring the Lord of the Dead. Observed on November 1 in the British Isles and parts of France, Samhain also marked the beginning of the Celtic New Year. Because it was a time of transition between the old and the new, the Celts believed that the souls of those who had died during the previous year gathered to travel together to the land of the dead and it was also a time when those who had died before that returned to visit their homes. November 1 was also considered the end of the summer period, the date on which the herds were returned from pasture and land tenures were renewed. People lit bonfires to scare away evil spirits and "sacrificed" fruits and vegetables, hoping to appease the spirits of the deceased. Sometimes people disguised themselves in masks and costumes so that the visiting spirits would not recognize them. Charms, spells, and predictions of the future were all part of the eve of Samhain. In the old Celtic calendar, that last evening of October was "old-year's night," the night of all the witches.

When Christianity burgeoned, starting in the fourth century, pagan festivals like Samhain were very much frowned upon. However, the Celts would not give up their ancient rituals and symbols — so the Christian church gave them new names and meanings. November 1 became All Saints' Day (All Hallows' Day in England), by proclamation of Pope Boniface IV in the 7th century, a celebration of all the Christian saints. The evening before All Saints' Day, October 31, became a holy, or hallowed, eve and thus All Hallows' Eve (later Hallow-e'en, Hallowe'en, Halloween). Despite the name change, this holiday's association with the supernatural persisted.

Halloween came to be accepted in America with the influx of Irish immigrants in the 1840s. Their folk customs and beliefs merged with existing agricultural traditions. The early American Halloween, therefore, was not only a time to foretell the future and dabble in the occult, but was connected with seasonal tasks of the fall harvest. Over the years, the holiday's agricultural and harvest significance faded and it became primarily a children's holiday — one where they dressed up as the spirits (ghosts and goblins) that their ancestors at one time feared.

Bonfire
Bonfire comes from the words bone and fire ("fire of bones") and originally indicated a large open-air fire on which bones were burnt, either as a ceremony (like a funeral) or for burning heretics or banned books. The Halloween bonfires were lit to scare away evil spirits. Nowadays, bonfires are also celebratory — after a day at the beach or for a homecoming football game.
The word costume came to English via French from Italian for "fashion" or "custom, habit," from Latin consuetudo/consuetudinem meaning "custom." Mask also made a trip through French (masque) from Italian maschera/mascara, perhaps from Latin masca, "evil spirit, witch."

Ghost
Ghost comes from an Old English word gast/gost, "spirit, soul" and has related forms in other West Germanic languages. These related words appear to be connected with Sanskrit hea, "anger, fury." Goblin is from French and it may be related to the German Kobold, a mythological spirit who haunted homes and lived underground in caves and mines. Etymologists believe it may be related to Greek kobalos and to Latin Gobelinus, mischievous spirits. The goblin carries the connotation of being grotesque and ugly, evil and malicious. The ghost is just downright scary, being the supposed soul of a dead person.

Jack-O'-Lantern
A jack-o'-lantern (also jack-a-lantern) is a hollowed-out pumpkin, originally a turnip, carved into a demonic face and lit with a candle inside. Light from a candle inserted inside can be seen flickering through the jack-o'-lantern's cutout eyes, nose, and usually grotesquely grinning mouth. The custom originated in the British Isles, with a large turnip or other vegetable rather than a pumpkin. The original meaning of the word jack-o'-lantern was "night watchman" or "man with a lantern," but it took on the Halloween sense by 1837, first in Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales.

Pumpkin
Pumpkin — the large fruit of the plant Cucurbita Pepo — is a word evolved from the original English spelling of pompeon or pumpion or pompion to pumkin and finally to pumpkin. The word pompion came from Latin pepo/peponem from Greek pepon, "large melon, edible gourd," from another word pepon, "cooked by the sun; ripe." Another spelling variant is punkin.
In Old English, witch was actually wicca and originally (c 890) was a man who practiced magic or sorcery, which we now call wizard. By the year 1000, witch came to be defined as "a female magician or sorceress."

Halloween Colors
The colors associated with Halloween are black and orange. Orange, the color of the jack-o'-lantern, is a symbol of strength and endurance as well as of autumn and the harvest. Black is primarily a symbol of death and darkness. The black of a witch's cloak and the black cat are reminders that Halloween was once a festival of the dead.

Updates

*** SUN Sim ***
Yep! Got my SUN Cellular sim last Saturday. Last Thursday actually eh nandun ako sa Sun sa Megamall to buy simcard kaso mejo naaliw yata ang Pilipinas sa promo na 24/7 ng Sun kaya nagkakaubusan na ng sim. I was there ng 7:30 tapos sabi nung girl sa cashier out-of-stock na ng sim, bukas na lang daw ulit. *how saddd )= * kaya ayu, nung Friday, Mike went to Megamall to buy the sim tapos he handed me my sim card nung Saturday. Sobrang natutuwa ako sa 24/7 free trial for new subscribers.

*** Megamall mala-Palengke nung Saturday ***

Syempre nasa megamall ako nung Saturday dahil sa 3-day sale. Kaso, hello?! sobrang dami pong tao! Sa pagkaka-alam ko eh aside from Megamall, there are other SM outlets on 3-day sale for the weekend, pero mukhang ang Megamall ang prefered ng mga tao.

*** Hair Cut ***

I'm planning to have my haircut later this afternoon. I want a shoulder length as the shortest, I just want the haircut naman only because madami na akong falling hair. hehe takot naman daw ako makalbo at my thirtys hehe. My hair isn't that long... to give you an idea, this was taken September 5 (last month)

** according sa nabasa ko it's normal to loose around 50 strands of hair per day.

The Knot

Sa mga di mawawaan kung ano yan... hmm it was a knot made from a tissue paper. While I was in Cebu, tambay sa Ayala Center with EEE peeps e napagkatuwaan namin ang game na ito. A iece of tissue paper will be devided into 7 pieces tapos each piece will be rolled. Tapos someone will hold the 7 rolled paper in the middle, such that you won't be able to see which end corresponds to the other end. Tapos the aim to make a big circle out of connecting the 7 rolled paper. Sabi yung result daw nun has something to do with your present lovelife.

I was the luckiest to end up connecting the 7 rolled paper into a big circle, kaso nga lang with a knot kaya di rin ma-reveal yung circle.

Jor-el has a funny explanation of the result, hmmm the knots daw represent flings??!! hello! weird noh?!

Well, this knot was made at Ayala Center Cebu, November 27, 2003. I still keep it in my planner kasi natutuwa ako, kahit may knots sya, I appreciate the fact na nabuo ko yung circle.... hehe I feel a lot more lucky than other people na hindi nakagawa ng circle ^-^

WIS ***S

for those who are fond of using WIS of Smart, I've encountered a weird result of

***S is near CUNETA ASTRODOME, in the vicinity of ROXAS BLVD, SAN RAFAEL, Pasay City Metro Manila (timestamp :: 09:45:26 October 11, 2004 )

it's not weird in the sense of the format of the message whatsover but only because this friend of mine claims being in Ortigas at the momment. Hmm, this bothers me, not because I'm thinking that my friend is lying, but because I understand that false results of Smart's WIS may cause a lot of trouble, specially in relationships that are on-the-rocks...

My officemate told me that she belives this GPRS locator is reliable. Her female friend has used this before to track her husband and found out that her husband is having extra-marital affairs.

And now, what if this WIS keeps on giving false results, I just can't imagine the trouble that these unreliable messages + jelousy could bring relationships... whew.. yun lang

My Color

HASH(0x892dc5c)

You're the color blue. You have the three c's in life--you're cool, caring and confident.
Trustworthy and honest, people are naturally attracted to you. You're unusually optimistic, but that makes life all the better. You're an imaginative person who loves sleeping and dreaming. Hard-working and determined, you excell in school. You're everybody's favorite, and this is because you have this undefined richness in your personality and attitude. Mild-tempered and stable. Not to mention very intelligent. Along with the fact that you're conservative, you're worried about the environment. So basically, you're a generous, dependable and devoted--just the kind of person everybody needs. Wouldn't it be great if everybody in the world were like you?

What color are you? brought to you by Quizilla

pero yung last line, Wouldn't it be great if everybody in the world were like you?, ay, di ko yata ma-imagine, madami ako look-alike! parang yung Duglets ni Dugong sa Marina.. nag-multiply!

salamat shelley sa link!! ü

Poems of Elizabeth

+ SONNET XIV +
If thou must love me, let it be for nought
Except for love's sake only. Do not say
I love her for her smile--her look--her way
Of speaking gently,--for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and certes brought
A sense of ease on such a day--
For these things in themselves, Belovèd, may
Be changed, or change for thee,--and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so. Neither love me for
Thine own dear pity's wiping my cheek dry,--
A creature might forget to weep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!
But love me for love's sake, that evermore
Thou may'st love on, through love's eternity.

+ SONNET XXI +
Say over again, and yet once over again,
That thou dost love me. Though the word repeated
Should seem "a cuckoo-song," as thou dost treat it,
Remember, never to the hill or plain,

Valley and wood, without her cuckoo-strain
Comes the fresh Spring in all her green completed,
Belovèd, I, amid the darkness greeted
By a doubtful spirit-voice, in that doubt's pain
Cry, Speak once more--thou lovest! Who can fear
Too many stars, though each in heaven shall roll,
Too many flowers, though each shall crown the year?
Say thou dost love me, love me, love me--toll
The silver iterance!--only minding, Dear,
To love me also in silence with thy soul.

I remember the girl in Shakespear in Love, after making love for the first time, saying "I never thought there's something more beautiful than poetry" ... I love poetry myself ... I think there's magic in it! There's power that draws me near to appreciate it.. and too bad that I can only be an appreciator of it. It is a powerful language of love. It makes a confesion of love more pure and true.

When I was younger, I used to receive poems from suitors... I like those poems though I know they were written just to flatter me, though there could be truth in them. Well, those were the days... I guess I won't be receiving poems again... I wish the poetry would come back... that it'll be back for me...

It's a sad story that a guy would devote his poetry to a girl who will break his heart... and how the poetry would be broken with it... That there will be no more poetry for the girl who is willling to love him and appreciate his poetry...

** The poem above is from Elizabeth Barret Browning, the sonnets were part of her greatest work, Sonnets from the Portuguese.
