Smallville S4 (ep guide + spoilers)

episode 1:
season premier
appearances :
Erica Durance (Lois Lane) , Margot Kidder (Bridgette Crosby)

Clark returns to Smallville re-programmed as Kal-El. Intent on fulfilling his destiny, Kal-El takes to the skies to steal a powerful kryptonite crystal. Meanwhile, Lois Lane comes to town to investigate the murder of her cousin Chloe. Also, Lana returns from Paris with a new attitude and a new boyfriend, Jonathan lies in a coma, and Lionel faces a grim new life in prison.

NOTES:
  • Sam Jones III no longer appears in the opening credits. Jensen Ackles is now listed fourth as a regular. Updated credits include new and additional footage, primarily from the previous season.
  • Erica Durance is listed as "Special Guest Star" and will continue to be in her future appearances.
  • Margot Kidder of course played Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the four Superman movies. Her "in another lifetime" comment alludes to the fact the characters were lovers.
  • This episode marks the first appearance of Black Kryptonite, not only in this series but in the entire Superman universe as well.
  • Music by Tahiti 80 (A Piece of Sunshine).
  • Allison Mack does not appear in the opening credits or is credited at all (presumably to keep the audience believing she's dead and won't be showing up again), and only appears in the episode itself via a pre-recorded tape.
  • Five Superman references: When the lightning is dissipating in the corn field, there is the image (albeit crude) of an "S" inside the familiar pentagon of Superman's chest shield; the colors that light up the cave wall are red, blue, and yellow; the blanket that Lois gives Clark is the exact color of red of the Superman cape; and the Superman "S" can clearly be seen on the Sphinx-ish figurine that Lex finds underground; When Lana does the charcoal rubbing of the "Warrior Woman" in the church, the shield the warrior is carrying is in the shape of Superman's famous chest-emblem - the symbol inside the shield (which becomes the mysterious tattoo on Lana's back) is a stylized "S."
  • You can see Lana's tattoo on the cave wall. Martha gets thrown at it when Clark defeats Kal-El.
  • According to Chloe's gravestone, she was 17. (1987-2004)
  • Jensen Ackles' last starring role was on Dark Angel. Interestingly enough, Dark Angel also had strange characters appearing on the skin of the female lead.
  • In the comics Dr. Bridgette Crosby is a scientist at S.T.A.R. Laboratories who works with kryptonite.

  • episode 2.
appearances: Erica Durance (Lois Lane) Michael Ironside (General Sam Lane) Robert Wisden (Gabe Sullivan)

Clark and Lois Lane investigate Chloe's apparent murder, but are stopped by an army officer, General Sam Lane, who turns out to be Lois' father. Lois suspects that Sam knows more about Chloe's death than he will admit, and Clark discovers that Sam has recently been in contact with Lex. Jason arrives from Paris and convinces Lana to continue their relationship. Suspecting that Chloe is still alive, Lionel sends an assassin with the power to morph his limbs into metallic weapons to keep Chloe from testifying against him.

    NOTE:
  • Michael Ironside is no stranger to the DC Comics world. He's provided the voice of Darkseid, Superman's most powerful rival, in Superman: The Animated Series and in the Justice League two-part episode Twilight.

  • Robert Wisden receives an opening guest credit despite only appearing in a short flashback with no dialogue, while James Bell (II) who has several extended scenes and a long conversation with Lionel, is credited to end-of-show.

  • There are people infected with a toxin, including Jason.

  • We meet the prison warden, Anita Stone.
  • Lionel is still saying he's a changed man, and "now wants to help others."

  • Lionel tells the judge he wants to STAY in prison to help people. (?!?!) Against Lionel's wishes... someone has gotten him out, and he is now a free man.
  • There's a character named "Otis Ford" in this one! Call Ned Beatty's agent, Otis has landed in Smallville. Otis is a project manager in his 40's who is working for Lex, and it is his people who have created the toxins. "Statistics aren't lying in these beds. My employees are," Lex says following an explosion in the lab.
  • Clark and Lex arrange for Jason to get a job with LuthorCorp. Maybe something bad happens with his coaching job?
  • The toxins cause other hallicinations, which make us think they hit Lex and Chloe as well. Chloe sees a woman she thinks is her mother, in a straight jacket. "I've been waiting for you, Chloe," the woman says. "You can't escape it. No women in our family ever have." The woman turns around, and her face is revealed as a gaunt version of Chloe herself!

"Time to make it official," Kal/Clark says, before they... well, we don't know what happens next, but one can imagine.
  • Lionel claims he is starting a new charity, to help sufferers of hunger, poverty, and abuse, but Lex doesn't buy it. "Perfect place to wash all that blood money and make it all look presentable..." Lex says. "Forget it, Dad. You're not getting a dime."

  • There is some conflict between Chloe and Alicia in the Smallville Torch office. After their bickering, Alicia implies to Chloe that Clark may be a "freak" himself. Could this revelation mean Chloe learning The Secret? "Everyone knows you're crazy, Alicia. Why should I believe anything you say?" Chloe tells her.

  • Lex tells Jason that it was a misunderstanding, and the security team is a bit overzealous. Apparently at some time previous to this episode Lana is attacked at her apartment above the Talon. To protect her, Lex has suggested that she stay with him at the mansion. Lana insists that she is all right with Jason staying there with her.
  • Later in the episode, Jason is attacked. Clark is at the police station telling Sheriff Adams, and provides evidence, a scarf from the car.
